SYSGO's Safe and Secure Virtualization PikeOS now available for applications using LEON processor and RTEMS OS

Mainz, Paris - August 26, 2010 SYSGO, leading supplier of software solutions for the world's most demanding safety and security applications, announces today the availability of its flagship product PikeOS for the LEON processor based platforms. RTEMS applications can run concurrently with PikeOS native, ARINC-653 and POSIX applications thanks to the safe and secure virtualization technology provided by PikeOS.

The LEON processor is a 32-bit synthesizable processor core based on the SPARC V8 architecture. The core is highly configurable, and particularly suitable for system-on-a-chip (SOC) designs. Several versions of the LEON processor have been developed. The LEON3 core is a re-implementation of the SPARC V8 architecture, with a deeper 7-stage pipeline and multi-processor support. The new LEON4 core is an evolution from the LEON3 core with improved performance thanks to wider internal buses, modified pipeline and support for a Level-2 cache.

RTEMS (Real-Time Executive for Multiprocessor Systems) is a free open source real-time operating system (RTOS) designed for embedded systems. RTEMS can be used in many industry sectors and runs on a wide range of architectures such as ARM, Freescale ColdFire, Texas Instruments C3x/C4x DSPs, x86, MIPS, PowerPC, and Renesas SH. RTEMS is in particular used in space applications since it also supports multiple microprocessors developed for this sector including SPARC, ERC32 and LEON. RTEMS is designed to support various open API standards including POSIX and uITRON.

PikeOS is an innovative OS from SYSGO providing an embedded systems platform where multiple virtual machines can run simultaneously in a secure environment. The Safe and Secure Virtualization (SSV) technology allows multiple operating systems APIs to run concurrently on one machine. PikeOS provides the widest range of operational “Personalities” of the market including, to name of few, Linux, certified POSIX, uITRON, OSEK, Ada, RT Java. PikeOS supports many different single- and multi-core processor architectures such as x86, PowerPC, MIPS, ARM or SH.

RTEMS is a new PikeOS Personality available first for the SPARC V8/LEON platform along with other standard Personalities already provided by PikeOS, PikeOS Native, ARINC-653 and POSIX.

“We are glad to see PikeOS being considered by a growing number of customers as the technological leader in the domain of virtualization platform for real-time systems”, said Jacques Brygier, VP Marketing at SYSGO.”The SSV concept we were the first to develop combines the performance of a true RTOS and the cost savings of an extended virtualization platform. In supporting LEON and RTEMS, SYSGO shows its commitment to address all industry sectors developing safety- and security-critical applications including secure communications, industrial and space projects.”

PikeOS includes CODEO, an Eclipse-based integrated development environment that provides guided configuration, remote debugging (often down to the hardware instruction level), target monitoring, remote application deployment, and timing analyses in addition to standard application development features such as compilers and assemblers.

PikeOS 3.1 for SPARC V8/LEON is available now. The supported personalities for this specific platform are the PikeOS Native, ARINC-653, POSIX, and RTEMS.

About PikeOS

PikeOS is an innovative product, providing an embedded systems platform where multiple virtual machines can run simultaneously in a secure environment. The Safe and Secure Virtualization (SSV) technology allows multiple operating system APIs, called “Personalities”, to run concurrently on one machine, e.g. an ARINC-653 application together with Linux. The PikeOS microkernel architecture allows it to be used in cost sensitive, resource constrained devices as well as large, complex systems. The simplicity and compactness of the PikeOS design results in real-time performance that competes head-to-head with conventional proprietary RTOS solutions. PikeOS is certifiable to safety standards like DO-178B, IEC 61508 or EN 50128, and is also MILS compliant.

SYSGO provides operating system technology, middleware, and software services for the real-time and embedded market. A differentiating capability of SYSGO is the SSV (Safe and Secure Virtualization) platform PikeOS, a paravirtualization operating system which is built upon a small, fast, and safe microkernel. It supports the co-existence of independent operating system personalities on a single platform, including ELinOS, SYSGO’s embedded Linux distribution. SYSGO supports international customers with services for embedded Linux, real-time capabilities and certification for safety-critical applications. Markets include Aerospace & Defense, Industrial Automation, Automotive, Transportation and Network Infrastructure. Customers include Airbus, EADS, Thales, Daimler, Raytheon, B Braun, Rheinmetall, Rockwell-Collins, Nokia Siemens Network, and Rohde & Schwarz. SYSGO has facilities in Germany, France, The Czech Republic and North America, and offers a global distribution and support network, including Europe and the Pacific Rim.
