Freescale Takes S08 Microcontroller Architecture to New Heights of Flexibility and Performance

First 8-bit MCU family with on-chip CAN, EEPROM and emulation/debug capabilities targets automotive and industrial applications

AUSTIN, Texas – Nov. 14, 2007 – Todays embedded system developers require exceptional integration and price/performance from the 8-bit devices that anchor their cost- and power-sensitive applications. To help developers get the most performance and functionality from their 8-bit designs, Freescale has introduced the S08D family of 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs)—the companys most highly integrated and scalable S08 devices to date.

Freescales S08D family features the industrys first 8-bit MCUs to integrate a controller area network (CAN) interface, electronically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) and on-chip emulation/debug tools The embedded CAN interface provides an ideal connectivity solution for many automotive and industrial control applications. Embedded EEPROM enhances system design flexibility by enabling data to be written and erased with ease and eliminates the need for external serial EEPROM. Integrated development tools with on-chip debug enable designers to debug quickly in real-time resulting in fast time to market. Each of these integrated capabilities is available across the full automotive temperature range of -40 degrees C to 125 degrees C.

Scalable, flexible S08D family options

The S08D family encompasses a scalable array of 8-bit MCU options optimized for a wide range of automotive and industrial control applications. In the automotive market, the S08D family targets body, chassis, safety and powertrain control. Prime industrial control applications include factory and building automation, security systems, medical monitoring equipment, and aircraft and aerospace electronics.

The S08D family currently features the following three product lines:

· 9S08DZ: The flagship line within the S08D family, with high-performance, full-featured devices offering both integrated CAN and EEPROM

· 9S08DN: Product line featuring embedded EEPROM without the CAN module, making it an ideal fit for non-networked and/or local interconnect network (LIN)-based applications and industrial applications that require memory flexibility

· 9S08DV: A cost-optimized product line featuring integrated CAN connectivity without EEPROM.

The three S08D product lines give developers the scalability, compatibility and design freedom to choose the optimal device for their specific application and system requirements. Pin compatibility across the three product lines and package scalability eliminate the need to add costly I/O expanders. A system engineer can easily migrate from one line product line up to another to expand system-level capabilities or migrate down to minimize costs. Additionally, the S08D family offers an upward migration path from Freescales 68HC05 and 68HC08 architectures for applications requiring enhanced peripherals and higher performance at lower costs. Engineers now have a pin-compatible portfolio of 8-bit MCUs that embrace customer constraints from cost to power consumption.

Power efficient by design

Manufactured on Freescales 0.25-micron process technology and providing 40 MHz core speed and 20MHz bus speed, the S08D family is designed to deliver high performance within a low power envelope. By keeping power consumption low, the S08D family allows automotive design engineers to continue increasing vehicle electronics content within existing 12V battery capacities. This low-power functionality makes S08D family devices ideal for power-sensitive automotive applications, such as sunroof and seat control, steering and chassis systems.

Freescales proven 0.25-micron process technology supports advanced design for manufacturing and design for test capabilities, which help designers using S08D family devices meet zero-defect quality goals for the automotive industry.

Development tools support

The S08D family is supported by a comprehensive set of software development tools, such as CodeWarrior® Development Studio, background debug mode (BDM), Multilink and Cyclone Pro, and hardware development tools, including evaluation boards, demonstration boards and programming adaptors. In addition, to these tools, Freescale has enabled software development to get a head start on their project by making available many of the required low level software drivers for things like CAN and LIN communication and many others.
